The Mound
Aerial View of the Smyrna Mound

The Bayraklı Höyük (settlement mound) which was settled since the 3rd millenium BC is a small hill located on a plain in the most inner part in the east of the Gulf of Izmir.

Before two decades, the mound occupied a large area of 120-140 thousand square meters including the surrounding slopes. Today, 80 thousand meter square of the mound together with the ancient site are located within the modern settlement.

The fact that the ancient site located at the center of the mound was used as vineyard by Tekel enabled the remains to survive protecting the remains from the expansion of modern urbanization.

In the Bronze Ages, settlement was occupying a smaller part of the mound, in the Greek period, settlement expanded towards a larger area which is now surrounded by modern walls.

30's...

If we think that the intramural settlement consisted of 500-600 houses in the most brilliant years of the city, we can assume that the city’s population in this period was approximately three thousand. However, the city was most probably expanding through the slopes of the Yamanlar Minor Mountain in the north and to the Bornova Plain in the east.
