The Mauseloum of Tantalus
The big necropolis which was used between 6th and 7th centuries BC was located in the north and northeast of the Bayraklı Höyük, on the slopes of the Yamanlar Mountain.
The Tantalos Tomb which was once clearly seen from the Bayraklı Höyük was nearly destroyed due to dense housing during the last fifty years. Ekrem Akurgal, in 1946 and 1950 excavation reports, pointed out that the tomb’s diameter was 31m and the tomb was built in the Archaic period namely at the end of the 7th century or in the first half of the 6th century BC. The results obtained during this first excavation project which ended in 1951 strengthened this estimation.
The years between 630-545 BC were the golden era for Smyrna. Smyrna was ruled by a king or a ruler in this period as it was the case in the other Ionian cities. It is most probable that the tumulus was the tomb of the ruler of the city.
There are also three other tumuli in the same region, they aere dated to the 4th century.
Today the necropolis area is fully covered by the modern settlement.
